MOMBASA, Kenya | The Slum Women Initiatives for Development (SWID) is taking strategic steps to link grassroots women across East Africa, emphasizing leadership development, agricultural empowerment, and community collaboration. The Uganda-based organization is actively shaping the next generation of women leaders while participating in a global feminist leadership forum convened by the Huairou Commission in Mombasa.

Led by Executive Director Kairamirwa Doreen King, SWID has impacted over 500 women in Uganda’s Busoga region through programs that combine leadership training, agricultural production and value addition, land rights awareness, and promotion of favorable settlement practices.

    Linking Communities Across Borders.

At the two-day workshop, Kairamirwa called for deliberate collaboration between grassroots women’s organizations in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and beyond. She emphasized the importance of sharing ideas, benchmarking strategies, and creating regional networks to strengthen women-led movements.

“Our local communities can work together toward a shared vision,” she said. “If we continue building and sustaining such forums, we can link our communities and create greater impact.”

Kairamirwa highlighted the potential for cross-border cooperation to expand market access for women’s agricultural products and to share leadership lessons, ensuring that emerging leaders are well-equipped to drive change within their communities.

Participation in the Global Feminist Forum.

SWID’s involvement in the Huairou Commission’s workshop underscores its commitment to engaging with global networks while promoting local impact. The forum brought together seasoned and emerging leaders to discuss mentorship, intergenerational leadership, political navigation, and community-based advocacy. Through participation in these dialogues, SWID shared experiences from its programs while learning from peers across the continent, fostering knowledge exchange and potential partnerships.

    Strengthening Internal Leadership

Beyond regional linkages, Kairamirwa emphasized the importance of internal organizational integration to cultivate the next generation of grassroots women leaders. By strengthening mentorship structures and operational capacity, SWID aims to ensure leadership continuity and effective implementation of programs. “Our goal is to create a strong operational backbone so that emerging leaders are capable of translating vision into tangible community impact,” she noted.

    Empowering Women and Communities

SWID’s programs combine leadership development, agricultural empowerment, value addition, and land rights advocacy to ensure that women are not only empowered individually but can also influence broader community outcomes. With a focus on both local needs and regional collaboration, the organization is setting a model for sustainable feminist leadership in East Africa.

By fronting women’s voices, promoting cross-border collaboration, and building intergenerational leadership, SWID continues to demonstrate that investment in grassroots women today ensures a stronger, more resilient feminist movement for the future.

February 4, 2026 Kaira King No comments yet

From an expert development perspective, the SWID Annual Report 2024–2025 demonstrates the effectiveness of rights-based, community-led programming in addressing structural gender inequalities. The report aligns with national development priorities and international frameworks, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 1, 2, 5, 11, and 13), by integrating land tenure security, food systems transformation, climate resilience, and women’s economic empowerment. Its use of data, beneficiary evidence, and reflective learning positions SWID as a credible grassroots organisation applying best practices in inclusive development, policy advocacy, and accountable governance.
